Venice’s Accademia Bridge over the Grand Canal is very close to the Accademia Gallery

Venice has long been known as a city of art. Today, visitors may be distracted by the canals, the gondolas, and the crowds, but this is a place where art lovers can feed their hunger. One such museum for art lovers is the Accademia Gallery.

The Accademia in Venice – Gallerie dell’Accademia in Italian – occupies a large 14th century palazzo on the Grand Canal in the Dorsoduro neighborhood. It was originally the gallery for Venice’s art academy, which was founded in 1750. The gallery became an independent entity in 1879.

Most of the important pieces in the Accademia’s collection are pre-19th century Venetian paintings. There are masterpieces by Titian, Veronese, Canaletto, and Tintoretto on display. Other parts of Italy and Europe are represented as well, with work by Vasari, Beillini, Mantegna, Tiepolo, and Hieronymus Bosch. One of the most famous pieces in the collection is a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci of “The Vitruvian Man,” although the fragility of the piece means that it’s rarely on public display. Any art lover should make sure the Gallerie dell’Accademia is on his or her must-see list of things to do in Venice, along with the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.

The Accademia Gallery is near one end of the Accademia Bridge, and both the Accademia and Zattere vaporetto stops. It’s open on Mondays from 8:15am-2pm, and Tuesday-Sunday from 8:15am-7:15pm. Admission is €9 per person, plus a €1.50 reservation fee (all tickets come with a specific entry time). Special exhibitions require an additional fee.
